The Black Sheep Phenomenon: Embracing Unconventional Success as a Female Entrepreneur

After graduating from my master's program, I got my dream job working in a hospital in my hometown. While no job is ever perfect, for the most part, the pros outweighed the cons, and I enjoyed working there.

That was until the day I met with my supervisor, and they asked whether or not I was a good fit for working with them.  

The question took me back. I had done everything they had ever asked, whether working overtime, helping when people called in sick, or staying late to finish my notes. 

Why was I being asked to reconsider how I fit with the company and whether or not I aligned with the company's mission?

After inquiring where this was coming from, my supervisor clarified that I had recently challenged the company on one of their existing patient policies. 

I couldn't believe what I was hearing: an organization that doesn't allow employees to voice their opinions is not a place I can inhabit with a clear conscience.

It took me less than a second to realize it was time to move on and start my practice. 

While equal amounts of excitement and terror ensued about going out on my own, I felt this was my destiny.

Like all entrepreneurs at the start of their journey, you constantly seek support from outside sources to help inspire and motivate you to succeed. Sadly for me, I was not receiving that from my family. Many of them thought I was crazy for leaving a job with benefits, a 401k, and a guaranteed paycheck to start a practice where I have no guaranteed clients.

I felt like the black sheep of the family. I am trying to become my own boss, whereas everyone else in my family works for a company.

Many female entrepreneurs have this same experience of feeling pressure to conform to traditional paths of success. Whether it's pressure to fit into a specific mold or to pursue seemingly "safe" career choices, the expectations can be overwhelming. However, I have also learned that there is immense power in embracing our "black sheep" status and carving our own paths to success.
